Found this at the BBC site: Doug Naylor has confirmed that the Red Dwarf film will be shot in Australia.
The co-creator and writer told the official Red Dwarf site the reason from the move to down under:
"We had originally planned for Shepperton, but at the time we were told there were no studios available. We looked everywhere - Germany, Austria, Italy - and eventually Richard Taylor at Weta (Lord of the Rings) recommended Australia.
We've been delighted by everything we've found out here. Australia's the sci-fi capital of the world right now. Star Wars, The Matrix, Farscape... It's the ideal place for Red Dwarf".
Preliminary design work is currently being carried out, ahead of a September shoot. Doug also confirmed that the film would feature a new race of villains, the Homo Sapienoids, "a fearsome combination of flesh and machine" responsible for killing off the human race.
Also found a bit more info from ganymede.ofla.info/#craigmovie : (little bit taken from the article) Craig Charles is set to achieve his Red Dwarf dream this autumn when work begins on a long-awaited movie version of BBC2's sci-fi comedy.
The 39-year-old, who plays Dave Lister, says the £12m film is due to start shooting in Australia in October for four months with the regular cast.

I can't remember where I heard this from, but I heard that the Movie will not follow continuaty of the series. The last episode to date "Only The Good" was a cliffhanger, and I heard that the movie will not at all follow on from that episode. However, "Only The Good" will be concluded if they make a 9th series to the show. How does everyone feel about this?

If it doesn't continue from the last episode, how would it fit in?

Oooh right...
Go to the Chris Barrie section here at the board and go to the "Interview" thread, and click on the link - in that he talks briefly about the movie and what it's plot line will probably be...

If it doesn't continue from the last episode, how would it fit in? Exactly, this is why I'm hoping it's just a rumour.

In a way I think it might be better if they didn't continue on... I mean it'd be like the X Files movie, and if you didn't watch the show normally you'd sit through the movie thinking "what the hell?"
I think - according to what Chris said in that interview - that they want to bring in new fans as well as the older ones - and if they give the movie a fresher feel, it might work... It's really hush hush though, so god knows what it's going to be like... just have to wait and see...

Well, it'd better be good. If it's just a rubbish spin-off then I'll be upset.

Well I think there is a good point for both sides. If they continued it from series 8, it'd be great! Everything from the last episode would be resolved, and it would be a happy day for Red Dwarf fans. If they didn't continue it on, it would still be good, as then, non-Red Dwarf fans could watch the movie and fully understand it, without needing to see the show. This may also give Red dwarf new fans, and make it really popular again, thus bringing back a 9th series after, hopefully.

Exactly ;D Which means a possible 9th series could pick up where the 8th left off, and answer the questions people might have had, and tie up all the loose ends, etc... More/new fans = more DVDs/merchandise bought = more money for peeps behind the show, hehe LOL... in theory

Which means more shows made and the circle continues. You can never have too much Red Dwarf. Unless you watch as much as I do, of course. I think it's bad for me.
