We know what the SPICE curry is, but the idea of just 'eating a curry' is unknown over here, yes... I PERSONALLY get it, (hell, I even knew what the 'Cup O Noodles' variant was!) as I adore UK culture and whatnot...but it just wouldnt translate well to the general public overseas. Another excellent point made by the 'Behind the Scenes- Dwarfin' USA' short on DVD 5 was the fact that you guys over there maintain a more prevelant 'class system' that Lister and Rimmer represented...we have 'trailer trash', etc, yes as a lower 'class', etc...but who the hell would want to see Jerry Springer class idiots like THAT in space?... (Damn, now Ive done it...the suits at UPN might have heard me and are more than likely busy throwing THAT idea into a new series!!....) K

Lol!
Okay, I just watched the USA version in full, and I have to admit some of the gags are okay... HOLLY: 'Well, I couldn't release you until the Radiation reached a safe level. Really, you're gonna laugh.' LISTER: 'How long?!' HOLLY: 'Just under 3 million years.' LISTER: *Takes some time to accept this*...My Baseball cards must be worth a fortune!
HOLLY: 'Mr Munson is a hologram. He can't touch anything except himself.' MUNSON: 'So basically, my sex life is unchanged.'
I know, I'm that kinda type...

You want to be dumped in PRIVATE!" ...then later, visiting Listers room..."I just stopped by to say...'Awww!'" The guy doing the Cat was pretty good too (even Danny approved) especially him spraying the string stating "This string is MIIIINE!!" K

See that irritates me. That just makes things even more divided than they already are. Just like they had to make US versions of the Harry Potter books because there are certain phrases or words that are different. Oh no LEARN! Jeez. I don't mean to be offensive but for crying out loud. It's quite ridiculous. My b/f and I were toying with the thought of the US attempting their own version of Little Britain. Could you imagine? "Big America" LOL... it just wouldn't work. It's true, the cultures are different, but that's what makes them unique and special. If we had to change things around just so some people could "understand" them better, the world would become a rather boring place, would it not?

If we had to change things around just so some people could "understand" them better, the world would become a rather boring place, would it not? See, thats JUST my point, personally... I LOVE having cultural differences, and when I watched all of the RD series (from season one to season 8) I didnt have any problem with the minor details that WERE in fact cultural...things like references to famous folks YOU guys have over there, food types, etc, etc...I personally just got the 'jist' of said gag, and thats all that mattered. HOWEVER, if you are planning to run an entire series and have it be vastly popular with the MASSES rather than just a select few that are willing to take differences in stride, you need to make the material accessible to EVERYONE...and THATS what the ideology behind an 'Americanization' is...you have to do it in a way that everyone can understand without having to do a bunch of research!... Like I mentioned, I personally ADORE the differences in our cultures, I think its what 'makes the world go 'round'...but this line of thinking just DOESNT fly with major networks, like NBC... K

That's what gives it the "Cult" status, really. Something like Friends couldn't be considered "cult", but quite honestly I can't stand that show because of it's utter falseness - all that "sweet sweety!" crap, yuck... Whereas Drew Carey comes across as being more down to earth, which I love, because you can feel closer to the characters. They're not rich, they don't live in some upmarket apartment, they have problems like everyone else does... Something like Red Dwarf is refreshing because the characters aren't perfect. They're not the best looking people in the world. They aren't the smartest, they aren't the strongest, or most powerful. They're real... Don't get me started on The Office, LOL! I just don't see why things need to be changed when the original is already excellent in it's own right. And I'm actually Australian so... that's a different kettle of fish altogether, heh... My tastes lean more towards UK TV shows, although, I do admit, that I love US stuff too, like Buffy, Angel, The Simpsons, Frasier... etc... But I'm babbling My b/f's the one you don't want to get tangled with in this kind of argument... He's very pro British, heh...

I guess I just have a personal fascination with 'interpretations'...someone elses 'take' on a subject. And this USA pilot was DEFINITELY a reinterpretation! Lister is NOT the Lister I knew and loved, as NONE of the characters (save for all 'Novelty Condom Head') were...these were almost like 'alternate dimension' versions...and I find that extremely interesting! I personally loved seein' ol' Kryten...and the new version of the Cat was pretty good, altho (again) no Danny! Craig B as the new Lister did a pretty good job, I thought...his comic timing was great, his acting acceptable...its just a VARIATION on what we already know and love. I personally found it an acceptable variation, and as I mentioned before...if it HAD 'gone to series' I would have given it a chance...it would have BEEN, after all, a relative to the established great show we know!... Then again, you cant really trust MY opinion on ANYTHING, as I am fond of telling folks...my fave bad movie is 'Howard The Duck'... K

LOL! (I won't go into Little Britain quote mode here ) Hey tis cool, we all have different tastes, I guess I'm just a bit of a 'purist' when it comes to some things Particularly my much loved UK TV shows To me, Craig Charles is Lister, Chris Barrie is Rimmer, and Danny John-Jules is Cat. Kryten doesn't really count coz Robert still played him It's hard to compare them though anyway, because I'm so used to the UK version and those actors, that seeing anyone else playing those roles would seem totally wrong...

See, THATS where my fascination with 'remakes' and interpretations comes in...sometimes the very fact that its so 'wrong' makes it utterly FASCINATING to me! Consider the horrid 'King Kong' remake in the 70s, or the audacity of remaking 'Casablanca' in the 70s as well (with DAVID SOUL in Bogies role, of all things!!) Guess my love for bad TV and movies is a major factor here as well... K

Well yeah, it can be interesting to see a different interpretation on something...
This new take on Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is a perfect example. I loved the old one, with Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, because it was just so trippy and classic... But this new one, with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp - well, it'll be more 'gothic', I'm sure... But apparently will be closer to the book...
I have reservations about the new one, but I'm also interested to see what it will be like (I'm a bit of a Johnny Depp fan), so I might see it... But at the same time, it's hard not to be concerned, especially being a fan of the old version...

My thoughts EXACTLY!! I cant see ANYONE as Wonka other than Wilder, he was a smeggin' GENIUS in that...but I suppose if someone were to attempt to do THEIR version of the character, Depp is your man...hes wicked AWESOME!... I feel the same way about the wonderful Pete Jacksons new 'King Kong'...if ANYONE is gonna redo it right, its THAT bloke...he is (in the words of Rimmer in 'Quarantine')..."Maaaah-velous!!" K

LOL... Well people are saying 'don't call the new Willy Wonka movie a remake' per se... I called it that at first but I was just annoyed that it was being done - I've looked into it a bit more now and I can see that it'll be different, rather than an actual "remake", so... But yeah... it's just hard to adjust, hehe... Oh and of course, the next Bond movie - a 'remake' of Casino Royale. I'm assuming it will be nothing like the one from the 60's, which was almost a parody, really... but classic, LOL... The only Bond movie I can actually stand, to be perfectly honest. But yes... apparently, like Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, the "new" version of Casino Royale, will be closer to it's original book as well... Let's just hope they get the new Bond (himself) right

Again, tho...you cant trust me...'Howard The Duck', donchaknow... K

Hey don't worry, I'm not a Bond fan either, but the only movie I've seen in full is Casino Royale, and that's because it's my b/f's favourite of the series, hehe...
Interestingly, I've heard from people that while Dalton wasn't the most popular Bond, he was the closest to the book version in personality and appearance...
