I know that in some British TV shows there is humor based on the characters' accents... which always goes *whoosh* over my head and past my confused American ears that can't recognize a lot different kinds of British accents -- and I wouldn't know the connotations associated with the accents that would make things funny even if I could recognize them.
I've been able to notice that Lister's accent is very different from the others' (and incredibly HOT -- I normally don't care about accents that much, but I make an exception here because his is one of the most awesome things I've ever heard). A friend told me that that is a Liverpool accent.
What about the other crew members? Rimmer? Kryten? Hollie(female)? Hollie(male)? Cat? (Cat's voice confuses me -- sometimes he sounds like he could be from different parts of the US, but I can never pin down where -- I'll assume I'm probably wrong on that one, since Googling just confirmed that Danny John-Jules is British.)
What are the connotations of all of these different accents?
Can you remember any accent-related humor in any Red Dwarf episodes, and if so, can you please explain it?
(BTW, Red Dwarf is only available through season six in America, so please don't tell me anything that'll spoil later seasons once they're finally available over here.)
Thanks to anybody patient enough to read this, and extra big thanks to anybody who answers! :-)

LOL I've always liked the accents on the show, I think it made it more funnier that they had a british accent. Craig Charles was really funny as Lister with his strong accent, it really made his comments funny. I thought though that his accent weakened a little as the show went on, perhaps its just me being paranoid? And Chris barrie as Rimmer, who could do a better Rimmer than Chris he is hilarious! LOL Here in Aus we just got the season 6 dvd and he is hilarious! ;D

Yeah, the entire cast is British, Cat and Kryten's accents are just put on. I think they're all from London, 'cept Lister, who's scouse. Liverpool's pretty near me, actually! ;D
