Okay I noticed some discussion in other threads...okay so it was 2 posts in the only thread, up until now, in this forum...about the Holly/Hilly switch, and i'm curious, what was the explanation in the show? and then when they switched back in later...does anyone have any insight to these hounding questings?!
well, in any case, here's the place to talk about such things ^_^ enjoy!

The same scrolling thing that explained Kryten: Holly had a sex change. I'm not sure about why they did it. It's got something to do with legal stuff, I think. I'll paste the marque:
Opening Star-Wars type scroll over a field of stars:
Red Dwarf III
The Saga Continues
The Story So Far...
Three million years in the future, Dave Lister, the last human being alive, discovers he is pregnant after a liaison with his female self in a parallel universe. His pregnancy concludes with the successful delivery of twin boys, Jim and Bexley. However, because the boys were conceived in another universe, with different physical laws, they suffer from highly accelerated growth rates and are both eighteen years old within three days of being born. In order to save their lives, Lister returns them to the universe of their origin, where they are reunited with their father (a woman), and are able to lead comparatively normal lives. Well, as normal as you can be if you've been born in a parallel universe and your father's a woman and your mother's a man and you're eighteen years old three days after your birth. Shortly afterward, Kryten, the service mechanoid, who had left the ship after being rescued from his own crashed vessel, the Nova 5, is found in pieces after his space bike crashed into an asteroid. Lister rebuilds the 'noid, but is unable to recapture his former personality. Meanwhile, Holly, the increasingly erratic computer, performs a head sex change operation on himself. He bases his new face on Hilly, a female computer with whom he'd once fallen madly in love.
The saga continuums...

oh....well, that's interesting...that's very interesting And here I thought that the Holly/Hilly had just switched it up when they took the boys back (familiar face and all, or maybe Holly was bored) of couse the problem with that is they would have called her/him Hilly, wouldn't they....
but now it makes sense, well as much sense as a computer wanting (and then giving itself) a head sex change can. lol
thanks for that tidbit...but that leads us to wonder, what was the explanation for changing back, did Holly just get tired of being female? or is there some other explanation? *runs off to look this up*

Hmm, that was after they found Red Dwarf again, when... hmm, I don't know enough to carry on. I know this site with RD scripts, so I'll look there. homepages.nildram.co.uk/~polymorp/rd-seasons.htmThis is all I got. From the episode Nanarchy rom series VII: <LISTER pulls out a large watch-like device and buffs it's surface. The watch screen suddenly comes to life, displaying a somehow familiar image of a disembodied head. The head is of a middle aged, balding man, whose expression is ever so slightly vacant...> HOLLY All right, dudes? LISTER What the smeg are you doing here, Hol? HOLLY Those little wotsits... KOCHANSKI Nanobots? HOLLY They remolicurised... they remolic... they remol... anyway, they did that word that I can't say to the whole ship, and left all the bits they didn't want on that planetoid! LISTER What, they fixed your core program, and then decided they'd be better off without you? HOLLY Yeah, it was shortly after they'd met me.

Cool site! I like the sypnosis of Rimmer:
Rimmer - A dead git who constantly gets on peoples nerves and then doesn't understand why people hate him.

I think the reason (outside the show) for the switch was that Norman Lovett didn't want to travel from his home in Scotland all the way to where they were filming in England so often.

Ah. But in the commentary he seemed to say that "someone could have sorted it out for him", so it couldn't have been just that.

I haven't listened to the commentary. I was watching series 4's "Built to last" last night but the only extras I've looked at are the smeg ups. And I call myself a fan *ashamed*

short explination to the confusion
holly performed a head sex change operation on himself to resemble a computer which he once fell in love with.
after holly performed the head sex change operation he kept the same name because holly can also be a girls name so it wouldn't matter.
when the nanobots recreated red dwarf hollys core program was fixed.this means he would return to his former self before the sex change. he met the nanobots, and was forced onto a watch after the nanobots abandoned him, and the nanobots recreated another holly, with the fully restored I.Q of 6000. the senile version of holly had to lie low or he would be erased for helping lister and co steal a starbug.
well thats my version anyway. you can only guess i suppose.
