Sorry, but no… you can’t remake the show, and you definitely can’t use an American cast. No offence to people from the US, but come on… Just take a look at the other US remakes of UK shows... Fawlty Towers? Men Behaving Badly? The list continues.
From what I’ve heard, the US version of Red Dwarf was pretty bad. Here are some sites and info I found on the net…

Info from the first site:
Two pilot episodes were made for a US version of Red Dwarf, neither of them very successful. They were there to replicate The End with the exception that Kryten was already there, and in the first one, Rimmer had a spot on his head instead of a H. The second episode was like a preview to the rest of the episodes. Neither of them are very good by Red Dwarf standards, there only being a few actual good jokes, and the cat being more catty in the first one (he actually Meows), and in the second one played by Terry Farrell of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, she is completely out of character, and is actually a very brave, coward-hating klingon-style character. Rimmer is the still a nerdy git, but in no way captures the true spirit of Rimmer played by Chris Barrie. Kryten is the exact same (indeed, he is played by Robert Llewellyn) and Lister is your ordinary everyday, cool kind of guy, and isn't very slobby at all.
Be that as it may... I'm still interested in seeing some of the US version purely out of curiosity. I just want to compare it, although going by what's been said, there is no comparison...
